Description: FILMS ON THE GREEN @ COLUMBIA presents its second annual back to school, free outdoor screening with Francois Truffaut’s classic film, Jules and Jim.
Jules and Jim (1962, 105 min), an iconic film of the Nouvelle Vague, will be presented outdoors on the steps of Low Memorial Library. The 2012 Films on the Green Festival, organized by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and NYC Parks and Recreation, has featured free screenings this summer of French movies adapted from French and American literature. Jules and Jim, based on the novel by Henri-Pierre Roché (1953), and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will conclude the fifth annual festival edition.
Jules and Jim are inseparable friends who come to meet the free-spirited and capricious Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). The three become instant companions, determined to live their lives to the fullest despite the war around them. When Jules declares his love for Catherine, Jim agrees to let Jules pursue her, despite his own feelings…

Iconic French actress Bernadette Lafont has dazzled audiences throughout her five-decade-long career. Named “the new face of the New Wave” by Les Cahiers du cinéma and hailed by the New York Times as “one of France’s most original actresses,” Lafont comes to FIAF to present a selection of her work, including her films with legendary directors François Truffaut, Jean Eustache, and Claude Chabrol.

Bernadette Lafont will introduce The Mischief Makers and Such a Gorgeous Girl Like Me on Tuesday, April 17 at 7pm, and will also present a special reading of letters written by Truffaut on Wednesday, April 18 at 7pm.

Bernadette Lafont, the iconic French actress considered to be a major face of New Wave cinema, will read a selection of letters in French written by the celebrated film director François Truffaut to actors, friends, and other collaborators.

Truffaut’s letters reveal unknown sides of his personality and offer an insider’s look at cinema and French cultural life in the ‘60s. Lafont, who will also share unpublished letters sent to her by Truffaut, will take audiences beyond the great man’s films.
