In this film, famed French photographer and environmentalist Yann Arthus-Bertrand looks at one of the major challenges to human survival: water. Filmed in some 20 countries, the film reveals the mysterious and fascinating world of fresh water through spectacular aerial images shot in regions difficult to reach and rarely filmed.

Description: FILMS ON THE GREEN @ COLUMBIA presents its second annual back to school, free outdoor screening with Francois Truffaut’s classic film, Jules and Jim.
Jules and Jim (1962, 105 min), an iconic film of the Nouvelle Vague, will be presented outdoors on the steps of Low Memorial Library. The 2012 Films on the Green Festival, organized by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and NYC Parks and Recreation, has featured free screenings this summer of French movies adapted from French and American literature. Jules and Jim, based on the novel by Henri-Pierre Roché (1953), and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will conclude the fifth annual festival edition.
Jules and Jim are inseparable friends who come to meet the free-spirited and capricious Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). The three become instant companions, determined to live their lives to the fullest despite the war around them. When Jules declares his love for Catherine, Jim agrees to let Jules pursue her, despite his own feelings…

Film presented in connection with the February 15 roundtable on « French and Francophone Cinemas in Dialogue »
This comedy of errors by award-winning Chadian director Mahamet-Saleh Haroun (who won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010) tells the story of a family recently emigrated from the Ivory Coast to Bordeaux, reeling from a number of setbacks. An extra-marital affair leads to Hortense’s separation from her older, very traditional African husband, who is in for a shock when he discovers her love affair, his eldest son’s secret love life, and the responsibilities of being a single parent.
