From drafts to final text – if any — the writer has to invent his/her own paths toward the work. The writer’s workshop (sketches, plans, notes, drafts, rewritings, proof corrections) constitutes the laboratory for a genuine style, as well as for the shaping of a work. Materials from 19th and 20th century writers (mostly Stendhal, Balzac, Flaubert, Proust, Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Perec, Beckett) will be used to illustrate different modes of literary invention.
