The French Resistance remains a legend in France today, but its history differs from the myth. Olivier Wieviorka discusses the internal divisions within the Resistance, assesses its efficacy, and examines why the Resistance did not become a more widespread phenomenon in occupied France. Olivier Wieviorka’s new Histoire de la Résistance: 1940-1944 will be published by Perrin in January 2013. Wieviorka is a historian and professor at the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan.
